Vice President Biden To Visit Port Of Houston

The Vice President’s stop at the port comes a day before he travels to Panama to tour the Canal expansion project. Congressman Gene Green’s district includes the Port of Houston.

“There has not been one dime of money appropriated on the federal level for port expansion based on the Panama Canal. Typically, it’s a 50-50 proposition. The local community comes up with 50% of the dredging money, and the federal government comes up with 50%. Congress needs to do our job and make sure our ports — obviously, I’m interested in the Port of Houston, but there are other members of Congress who work with other ports across the South – to expand to handle that cargo coming in for the expansion of the Panama Canal.”

Biden toured the ports of Baltimore; Charleston, South Carolina; and Savannah, Georgia in September. He’s been noting improvements meant to accommodate larger ships that will be able to pass through the canal starting in 2015. The Obama administration sees such infrastructure projects as key to U.S. job creation.
