Local Auto Dealers Rack Up Strongest Quarter In A Dozen Years

Total vehicle sales for the Houston region registered just shy of 33,000 in September. That’s an increase of 7% from August and 32% from a year ago. The September numbers pushed sales for the third quarter of 2013 to the highest for any quarter since 2001.

Steve McDowell is president of InfoNation and publisher of TexAuto Facts. He says Houston’s healthy job growth means more people can afford to buy new transport.

“What we’ve found is, over the past three quarters, is that we’ve held with sales that are above 50% for vehicles priced below $30,000. That tells me we’ve got a very strong base that spreads across our economy.”

Nationwide, it was a different story. Uncertainty over the economy caused monthly sales to fall in September to their lowest level since January.
