Conroe's Lone Star Executive Airport sees about 65,000 takeoffs and landings every year. About half of that traffic
is local, but the airport is also used by business jets, and the problem is that the main runway is too short to always accommodate those planes.
"Many of those aircraft, in the four warmest months of the year, cannot take on the amount of fuel and thus fly the stage length they would prefer out of here because the runway simply isn't long enough."
Airport Director Scott Smith says they're now starting work to expand the runway, from it's current 6,000 feet to 7,500 feet.
He says that will allow Lone Star to handle up to 95 percent of the business aircraft that want to use the airport.
"The way that business is developing in the north Houston area, moving north, there's a lot of activity, obviously with the Exxon-Mobil campus and the ancillary business that it brings to the area is indicative of what's going on."
The runway expansion will cost about $17 million dollars. TxDOT's Aviation Division is paying the bulk of the cost while Montgomery County is pitching in the rest.
Smith says it's a huge investment in the airport's future.
"We're anticipating that we will grow in operations about two to five percent per year over the next 20 years due to the extension."
The new longer runway should be ready by June of next year.
