This Weekend Discovery Green Belongs To The Dogs

There they are, dogs of every imaginable breed: Greyhounds to German Shepherds, Beagle to Border Collies, Rottweiler to Russell Terrier just to name a few. They all have one thing in common: their love of the water.

"We've had Chihuahuas that shouldn't even be in the water that actually competed with us, and that's the funniest thing you ever saw jump."

Bob DeWire is event manager with Dock Dogs Worldwide. He says the event is gaining in popularity worldwide:

"The origin just comes from two hunters on the end of a dock, on a two dollar bet, want to see which black lab could jump the farthest. And 13 years later, we're doing 250 cities, 6 cities in the same weekend. We have a Dock in all of Great Britain, all of Canada, Australia, and in two weeks we're heading to Rome, Italy."

Dock Dogs is the sport of dogs diving into a long pool of water for a ball or some other favorite toy to earn points, the competition is meant to be a fun affair between dog and owner, like Jason Payne and his Pit Bull named Baby Blue.

"She loves it ... all for her."

Hernandez: "What do you get out of watching her perform?"

Payne: "Satisfaction (laugh) yeah, she ... she loves it."

Robbie's dog Picasso is an Australian Shepherd that she rescued about four years ago:

"He has a little bit of a confidence issue, so he stops at the end of the dock, and that cuts his jump short. But we're working on it."

Hernandez: "What excites you about watching Picasso?"

Lori : "The interaction with other people. He was never socialized before, and now he is happy around other dogs instead of scared, so that's always nice to   nice to see progress."

Lori San Miguel, with Discovery Green, says it is such a popular event the  downtown park.

"Dock Dogs is a wonderful addition to Discovery Green. A bunch of fun for the entire family."

Events include dog training demonstrations and appearances by favorite look-alike characters and animal adoptions. It's on through Sunday and best of all it's free.
