Houston Snags $6 Million In Bike Trail Grants

It might seem like TxDOT only pays for roads and bridges, but riding a bike is a form of transportation, too, and that's why the transportation department awarded $6.6 million to the Houston Parks Department for hike and bike trail connectors.

Houston Mayor Annise Parker says the city will match another $6 million in public and private funds to finish the four projects.

"Three of the four funded projects will connect existing trails, parks, bus and METRO rail stops in neighborhoods along Brays Bayou. And the fourth will tie in to an ongoing flood control project on Hunting Bayou."

The TxDOT grants come from the Transportation Enhancement Program, which provides funding for non-traditional transportation activities.
