Gerland is the Houston-based parent company of Food Fair, Food Town, and Grand Market. Formerly a major player in region’s grocery sector, it now controls less than 2% of the local business.
The company’s co-owner, Jeff Reeder, died last year. The families of Reeder and CEO Kevin Doris have owned Gerland for decades. Dave D’Arezzo, chief operating officer for Grocers Supply, says the families decided it would be a good time to sell.
“If someone shops at one of the Gerland stores or if they work for the Gerland stores, they’re going to notice no difference. The key executive, Kevin Doris, is going to stay on, and he’s going to have autonomy to run the chain the way it’s been run for the last forty years.”
In addition to being a top competitor of Gerland through its Fiesta Mart chain, Grocers Supply has also been a wholesale distributor to Gerland’s stores since the 1970s. The deal is expected to close later this month.
