Women Filling Larger Percentage Of Oil & Gas Jobs

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the oil and gas sector added 3,900 jobs between New Year’s Day and March 31. That’s down from 6,700 jobs added during the previous three months.

Paul Caplan is president of Houston-based industry research firm Rigzone. He says nearly half the new hires in the first quarter were women.

“If you look at the overall makeup of the professional workforce in the oil and gas industry, you see that only 18% of the industry itself is women. So that half of the hires in the first quarter were women is, I think, a sign that some of the programs that the major oil companies and service companies have been putting into play in terms of trying to attract more women to the industry is actually now taking hold.”

Caplan says women are filling more jobs at virtually every level of the industry, from geophysicists to field service technicians.
