Small Business Survey Finds Optimism for Hiring, Raises

The American Express Small Business Monitor indicates 93 percent of Texas business owners plan to grow over the next six months — up from last fall, when 76 percent said they had growth plans.  Alice Braden is a small business advisor for American Express.

"So I look at small business owners — I don't necessarily even think of them as optimists. I think for them as pragmatists. So when they tell me that they plan to grow over the next months or they plan to hire over a certain period of time, I tend to believe them."

And Texas small businesses are optimistic.

"They plan to hire and they plan to give employee raises. So again, talking about Texas business owners, 42 percent plan to give their employees raises. And overall in hiring, it's a bit higher also in Texas — 38 percent of companies in Texas plan to hire over the next six months, and nationwide that number's only 31."

Braden says social media is important to businesses of all sizes now, and companies need an internet presence if they want to be found.
