TxDOT Discusses Plans For Congested US Highway 288

The segment of U.S. Highway 288 between U.S. 59 and the 610 South Loop ranks 25th on TxDOT's list of the 100 most congested roadways in Texas.

"Anyone who drives that corridor on a daily basis or a periodic basis recognizes that we are at capacity there."

TxDOT's Raquelle Lewis says they're ready to present the results of preliminary engineering and evironmental studies on a plan to improve 288.

That's between U.S. 59 and County Road 60 in Brazoria County.

"Specifically we're looking at including a toll-lane configuration along the 26 miles of 288."

They're also looking at new overpasses at busy intersections, as well as improved access to the Medical Center.

The price tag for the entire project stands at about $1.3 billion. TxDOT says the timetable for the work depends on available funding.

But Lewis says the legislature has given TxDOT the okay to proceed with the work while looking for alternate sources of financing.

"Whether that is utilizing a concessionaire, or doing a design-build project, or using certain toll elements to fund the project."

There's a public meeting on the project Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. at DeBakey High School.

Another meeting is set for Thursday evening at Berry Miller Junior High in Pearland.
