North Forest ISD To Fight Closure On Multiple Fronts

In Northeast Houston, parents, students, school administrators and elected officials showed up at a town hall forum on Saturday.

“Everybody was in agreement that we should fight to keep North Forest open.”

That’s Sue Davis with North Forest ISD.

“It’s their school district. It’s their children. Those people in that community have gone through those schools. They’ve graduated from those schools. Their kids are going to those schools now. They want schools that run by their community in their community.”

Last week, the Texas Education Commissioner recommended for the second time merging North Forest with the Houston Independent School District because of continued poor academic performance.

Davis says North Forest has improved and will fight in several ways.

First they’ll request a review, just like they did last year with the Texas Education Agency.

“We also have a lawsuit pending in Travis County where we won on the first round and TEA is appealing that”

And Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee will fight in Washington, where the U.S. Department of Justice must approve any shut-down.
