Plans are now in the works for a reversible toll road along the existing lanes of State Highway 288, from Brazoria County to downtown Houston. Officials have indicated they'd like to start construction as early as next year.
As part of that project, TxDOT wants to build a direct connector between the toll lanes and the Medical Center.
"We are looking at options for reducing congestion and helping to move traffic through a very highly congested area."
TxDOT's Raquelle Lewis says they're looking at six different alternatives for the connector's route.
Those alternatives include Old Spanish Trail, Holcombe Boulevard, and Hermann Drive.
"It would essentially be an elevated structure that would tie into an existing facility that provides connectivity into the Medical Center."
Not on the table is a proposed seventh alternative that was first presented last summer. That route would have taken the connector from 288 to MacGregor Way.
"There was lots of public outcry and sentiment about that particular alternative making a connection because it would have some impact to MacGregor Park."
A public meeting on the 288 connector project is from 6:00-8:00 tonight at DeBakey High School.
