A drug conviction two years ago led to the arrest of Porter. It was then that a DNA sample was taken from him before he was sent to state jail.

Sgt. Eric Klegg is with the Harris County Sheriff Department's Cold Case Squad.

"The DNA was taken from him the summer of 2012. We got our hit a couple of months later, and we began follow-up investigation on this case."

Thurman's mother, Arvis Thurman says they never gave up hope her killer would be found.

"Ten whole years we've been trying to figure this out. There's some kind of closure there, we can get a little peace. We still wonder why he did this."

Porter denied he was involved in the death of Thurman, but Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia credits detectives for collecting evidence and ...

"The fact that science is now being a greater part of our strategy, I think we're gonna be seeing more and more people in jail for what they've fone, not just for what we caught them for."

There are some 600 cold case murders waiting to be solved in Harris County.
