Galveston hotels enjoyed higher occupancy rates this summer than those of any competing tourist venue in Texas.
“We look at our competition in the state being Corpus Christi and South Padre Island, as well as some of the big cities — San Antonio, Austin.”
Kelly de Schaun is executive director of the Galveston Island Park Board of Trustees. She says the increased hotel occupancy rates brought in $8.4 million in taxes for the April-to-July season.
“More importantly, however, I think, for us, we also saw significant increases in the average daily rate, what the hotels were able to charge this year compared to last year. So, overall, it showed the economy down here was quite robust.”
De Schaun credits a $600,000 marketing campaign Galveston ran this summer for boosting the island’s profile as a tourist destination. She says the opening of the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier and last year’s renovation of Moody Gardens also contributed to the strong season.
