The Texas Reality Check website not only helps teens figure out what they want to do with their lives, but it also lets them know how much their choosen career would pay. From there, young people can use the interactive website to learn how to budget for the lifestyle they want.
"Certainly making that informed choice early is very key."
Lisa Givens with the Texas Workforce Commission says the site breaks down Labor Department numbers in a way that's easy for young people to understand.
"The Texas Reality Check is a good starting point for young people looking for information on where do I go, what do I do, what is there out there."
Once kids choose their career, they can decide where in the state they want to live. Do they want a luxury apartment, or will they be living at home with mom and dad? And what about necessities like clothing. Do they want high-end designer wear, or basic clothes for work?
"It really gives a true life picture. I've done it myself and I can tell you it's pretty accurate."
Givens says once kids get their reality check, they can go to other Workforce Commission websites to get detailed career information.
