Houston Hosting 2011 Senior Olympics

Houston found out today it will host the 2011 Senior Olympic Games. With the aging baby-boom population, the Senior Olympic Games continue to grow and this year had more participants than the Olympic games.

The mission statement of the senior games is to promote healthy lifestytles for adults age 50 and over through education, fitness and sport. Houston had failed on a previous bid, Senior Olympics CEO Bill Bankhead says the games feature 18 sports.

Bankhead expects that by 2011, 15,000 people will participate. The last Senior Olympics had an economic impact of $34 million in Pittsburg.If you'd like to compete ... don't wait until 2011. Barbara Shephard is the past director of the Houston Senior Olympics which is held every year hosted by the Jewish Community Center. As many as 1,200 take part.

While the local games are played in March and April, the national games are held in August. Officials say they'll adjust to the temperatures... for example, a lot of traditionally outdoor sports like archery can be played in Reliant stadium or some events will be held in the evenings after the sun goes down.
