El Centro de Corazón, a Houston-based health center and social service organization, is hosting a back to school health fair today to aid low income families with elementary school age children. The fair will distribute 300 backpacks, offer free haircuts and dental checkups, and provide assistance with Medicaid and other services.
Obed Canjura, outreach coordinator for the center, says that the low-income families the center assists have difficulty providing these supplies.
“Especially in the East End, we have so many families – more than 50 percent are single parents – and they don’t have the money to buy the basic school supplies for the kids. When we have our surveys, one of the things we can help in the most is through school supplies.”
At least 200 people are expected to attend. Cenjura says that the center is planning a second event for those who may miss out today and underscores the importance of continued donations.
“Right now we’re asking for donations of school supplies and anything that can help – pencils, books, and all the funds we can use so we can purchase more school supplies for elementary school students. Right now we’re asking community supporters, businesses, and other organizations and of course, your public if they can help.”
The fair is taking place today from 9 AM to 1 PM at the center’s John S. Dunn Health Center at 7635 Canal Street. No advance registration is required to attend.
