If you're a Houston foodie, then the list of people behind the upcoming charity bar reads like a Who's Who of the local restaurant world.
Bobby Heugel of Anvil, Justin Yu of Oxheart, Chris Shepherd of Underbelly, Ryan Pera of Revival Market, and the list goes on, just a few of the organizers behind the new concept.
Heugel says the bar will open in about four months in the space formerly occupied by the Red Cat Jazz Cafe on Congress near Main.
"It's a beautiful space and it's one of the older buildings in Houston. It was built in 1882. And it has had a bar in it for a long time, outside of Prohibition, it actually had a bar called the Casino Saloon originally. So the actual money that we have to put into the project is pretty minimal."
For every drink purchased, customers will be able to cast a vote for one of four different charities.
The selection of charities will rotate out every month and whichever one gets the most votes will get the month's proceeds.
Heugel says there are non-profit bars and restaurants in other cities, but they're run by organizations. This is the first he knows of put together by a group of people in the food industry.
"I'm really excited for the opportunity to just give back to the city and say thank you to all the people who have supported us at our businesses and support the businesses in our organization. I think that it could signify maybe just a small change in how people think about restaurants and bars and the role that they play in their lives."
They don't have a name for the bar yet, but if this particular group of restaurateurs' past work is any indication, once it opens, it'll be one of the hottest spots in town.
