Seventy-five percent of Texans responding to the AAA Summer Travel Survey say they plan to hit the road this summer and they'll probably go somewhere here in Texas. That's about 3 percent more than last year.
Top destinations are San Antonio and Galveston, followed by Austin, Dallas, and Big Bend National Park.
AAA's Doug Schupe says the average price for a gallon of gas in Texas now stands at $3.38 a gallon, and that's about 21¢ lower than this time last year.
"We have ten consecutive weeks of declining gas prices. And that's may be one reason why a lot of folks said they're going to be traveling at least one trip this summer."
But Schupe says gas is still expensive for some families. Nineteen percent of those surveyed say they're staying home this summer, mostly because of gas prices. Other reasons for not traveling include rising prices for household expenses, along with higher costs for hotels and meals on the road.
