When Houston residents hear the words Reliant and Minute Maid, many are more likely to think of the stadiums bearing their name than the actual products the companies sell.
BBVA Compass is hoping to get the same type of name recognition after shelling out a hefty sum for the naming rights to the Dynamo’s new stadium. This is bank president Manolo Sanchez.
"We like sports sponsorships. We already are the official bank of the NBA and have other international sponsorships in sports."
Sanchez says he wants BBVA to play a role in the community surrounding the stadium. That’s one of the reasons volunteers from the bank and the Dynamo are helping some area residents with home refurbishing projects.
"Part of our effort of not just building the stadium and putting our name on the stadium — it’s also helping the community around the stadium. And so that’s really what we’re here to do. We’re rebuilding three homes."
One of the homes they’re working on belongs to 93-year old Concha Rodriquez.
"They built this ramp? Yes, from here to over here. The deck, I did it, but it was not under code, so they had to fix to where it was, you know."
That’s Rodriguez’s daughter Juanita. She says volunteers have helped fix several plumbing and electrical problems that needed addressing as well. Things they either didn’t have the time or money to have done.
"And so this was like I said a blessing. They say if you do good things, good things come to you. That’s what they told me yesterday and I said, 'ok.' We’ve done volunteer, my sister and I. My sister still volunteers. So I think that when you give back, I guess you will receive right?"
The house is just a few streets away from the new stadium. Soon they’ll be able to hear the roar of the crowd from their front yard.
After playing at the University of Houston for so many years, Houston Dynamo President Chris Canetti says the team and players are just happy to finally have a place to call home.
"Our players are used to playing in brand new buildings, because there’s 11 of them that have been constructed in North America. So but they’re happy to have their own home now. I think the most important thing and exciting thing is for these player to be walking out of the tunnel, in front of a full house, and just a crowd of great supporters."
Opening day at the new stadium is May 12th.
