Officials Call Anti-Drug Smuggling Operation a Major Success

The old saying, there's strength in numbers appears to be true for law enforcement.

The sheriff's department, DEA, customs and border protection and other agencies worked together on an anti- drug smuggling operation and arrested 100 people. Leslie Luczkowski the acting director of customs and border protection says her agents used a scanner to search vehicles for drugs.

"It's a large scale x-ray able to image vehicles and with the advancement of concealment in vehicles it’s an important tool that we can use and we were very happy to support and look forward to the next operation."

The two day operation took place on highway 90 and Interstate 10 between Beltway East and the Harris County line. The area is known as a heavy drug trafficking route which is why they pulled over more than 900 vehicles for routine traffic violations.

District Attorney Pat Lykos says the operation won’t end drug smuggling in the area… but it will make smugglers think twice about their next move.

"We’re making tactical strikes against their operations. Their command and control and their transportation and now they’re afraid to go down that particular corridor. They’re going to be afraid to go down every single corridor."

Drug sniffing dogs also got involved in the operation. In just one arrest they found 2 and a half kilos of cocaine and a stolen weapon.

Major Michael Wong, head of the Sheriff Department’s criminal investigations bureau says future operations like this one will keep the heat on the smugglers.

"In the future we’re going to do more of these task force type operations, let everyone have a piece of the pie and we’ll gain more coverage that way."

Despite the involvement of so many agencies Sheriff Adrian Garcia says they need help from one more group...the public. He wants you to go to go to Iwatchharriscounty.com to leave tips about drug smuggling operations.
