The Labor Department says unemployment rates declined in 28 states in February. That included Texas, where unemployment fell to 7.1%, down from 7.3% in January. Rates rose in eight states and were unchanged in 13 plus Washington, DC.
The improvement was broader in January, when unemployment rates fell in 45 states. Still, job growth was more widespread than in previous months. Employers added jobs in 42 states, the most in almost a year. Ohio, Texas, and New York reported the biggest job gains.
Nationwide, the economy added 227,000 net jobs in February. The unemployment rate stayed at 8.3% after five straight months of declines.
