Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 7.3% in January. That’s down from 7.4% percent in December and from just over 8% in January of last year.
The Texas unemployment rate is a full percentage point below the national rate of 8.3%. January’s is the lowest rate in Texas since April 2009.

“Texas added an impressive 73,800 private sector jobs in January. Over the past 12 months, we’ve seen the growth of the private sector in the addition of over 332,000 jobs in our private sector economy here in Texas.”
The report shows the Houston area unemployment rate was slightly higher than the state average at 7.6%. That’s an increase from 7.2% in December, though still well below the 8.7% percent unemployment rate of January 2011.
