TxDot will soon seek proposals from companies who hope to work on the northwest section of the Parkway. This segment is a 37 mile route toll route that will pass through Harris and Montgomery Counties.
In November, TxDot requested qualification statements from companies interested in working on the project. The agency's Kelli Petras says they'll soon issue a "Request for Proposals" as part of a public-private partnership known as a "design build" strategy.
"The company or team that wins this contract is able to start construction as soon as the contract is executed. So they're basically designing and constructing at the same time."
TxDot says the project is designed to reduce traffic congestion for about 2.5 million people who live in the area.
"We're hoping to have a contract out and secured by the end of 2012 or early 2013. Ultimately we hope for construction to start around that time period."
Petras says the cost of the new segment amounts to about $839 million. When completed, the Grand Parkway will be a 170 mile loop around the Houston metro area.
