The first few days of school are a matter of working out the kinks and getting into the routine, but HISD Superintendent Dr. Abe Saavedra says things are going smoothly so far.

In many ways it's another routine school year, parents won't notice as many changes as administrators and teachers will. The district is operating under a new structure that went from 13 administrative districts to five regional districts. The district is also operating with executive principals that each school principal will report to.

Of course one of the hardest things for parents to deal with is preparing small children for the new school experience. Michelle Rozas is the principal of the Mistral Early Childhood Center.

HISD has more than 200,000 students starting classes this week in 305 schools.
