In Honor Of Civil Rights Leader

UH bandThe Original MLK Birthday Parade started at Minute Maid Park. There were several floats, bands and cars as part of the procession.

The 18th annual MLK Grande parade, held in Midtown at San Jacinto and Elgin, was lead by Harris County Constable Mae Walker, the first female and the first African American female constable in Harris County.

The day was perfect for a parade, and I asked some kids what the day meant:

"Today we celebrate Martin Luther King's birthday and what he did."

Pat Hernandez: "What does today mean to you?"

"It's an historic moment, it means a lot."

"Today means like being as one and celebrating his birthday."

This father had his hands full with four young kids, but judging by the look on their faces, they were having a good time. He says he will make sure his kids know the importance of the day.

MLK parade"It's something special for African Americans, as far as our advancements in civil rights. He brought us through generations. We're able to do a lot of things now that we weren't able to do in the 60s you know, 40-50 years ago — not only African Americans but minorities in general. They paved the way for people like Julio Cesar Chavez with the farm movement. We do have a long way to go, but today is a special day."

33 years ago Houston was the first city to honor Dr. King with a parade, and his father, Dr. King Sr, was the very first grand marshal of that event.
