The defense opened the second day of testimony by asking Judge David Hittner whether Stanford’s wrist manacles could be removed so that the defendant could take notes. The judge agreed. He said he’d been waiting for the defense to make the request all through the first day of testimony and would have granted it then if asked. Stanford’s ankles remained shackled.
Stanford sat through the proceedings calmly. He spoke with his legal team during breaks in the testimony, at one point reading material one of his attorneys had set up for him on a laptop.
The defense called neurologist Ralph Lilly and forensic psychiatrist Victor Scarano as expert witnesses. Both doctors testified that Stanford remained incompetent to stand trial, due to the effects of a traumatic brain injury he suffered in a jailhouse fight.
Testimony in the hearing is expected to wrap up later today.
