Houston Unemployment Rate Drops to 8.1%

The BLS is reporting Greater Houston's unemployment rate dropped to 8.1% in October. That's down from 8.6% in September. But it's only a slight improvement from the 8.2% measured in October last year.

The Houston area also added 79,500 new jobs between October 2010 and October 2011 — an increase of 3.1%.

That means Houston gets to keep its title as the nation's biggest job creator, at least in absolute terms. Number two Dallas-Fort Worth added just under 49,000 new jobs year-over-year. In percentage terms, the Houston area came in second among the nation's largest metro areas, just behind California's Silicon Valley at 3.2% percent.
