At the beginning of each school year there is a "Backpack Party." Today at the Star of Hope's Woman and Family Emergency Shelter on Dowling about a hundred kids got lunch and school supplies.
Mathew will be in the 5th grade at Rusk Elementary this year. He says the things he gets will really help.
Marilyn Fountain is the Star of Hope's community affairs director. She says homeless children are in a tough place, they did nothing to cause their situation and they can do nothing to end it. Fountain says the children's poverty should not set them part from others.
The work of gathering everything from shoes and socks to back packs is a huge task but Fountain says thanks to a lot of people there is always enough to ease the burden children who for no fault of their own have no place to live.
