High Gas Prices Push Texans To Change Holiday Shopping Habits

shopping bag appNearly two-thirds of the respondents to AAA Texas’ Third Annual Holiday Shopping Poll say high gas prices are having a significant effect on their household budgets. Sarah Schimmer is a spokeswoman for AAA Texas.

“Texans are concerned about gas prices. They’re concerned about the state of the economy, and that’s going to impact their shopping habits and some of their shopping behaviors going into the holiday season, and especially in the Houston area, because so many people commute to and from work, picking up the kids, and doing other family related activities.”

The poll finds Texans will try to stretch their holiday budgets this year compared to last. Consumers say they’re more likely to look for free shipping offers online when making their purchases. They’ll also look for less expensive gifts and shop more at discount stores. Just over a third of those polled say they plan to spend “slightly less” or “a lot less” on holiday gifts this year than last.

The latest AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch finds the average price of a gallon of gas in the state is $3.25 – 63¢ more expensive per gallon than a year ago.
