Slow Early Voting Turnout Starting To Pick Up

Harris County Clerk Stan Stanart says early voting, which started last Monday, has been about 25% behind what is was in 2009. He says things are starting to pick up though.

"We've got through Sunday 19,751 people who have voted in person and so it's picking up. We got a little slow start, but people are waking up and understanding there's an election going on and so they're turning out the vote."

Early voting ends on Friday, with the election next Tuesday. Stanart says every election is important and especially this one for
city of Houston voters.

"It's our constitution, the state constitution. Ten constitutional amendments and people need to study these. And if you live in the city of Houston, it's the mayor, it's every city councilmember. It's people's responsibility and their duty to elect whoever represents them. I encourage every person to study the issues, study the candidates and go vote."

There are 37 early voting locations across Harris County.  For more voting information, visit KUHF Election 2011 coverage.
