"Low fat vegetarian tamales ladies ..."
It’s about 12:30 in the afternoon and everywhere you look outside Houston City Hall there are people eating. Some are sitting in the grass.
Others like Grey Hancock are at tables and benches. Hancock says he’s been coming to the Urban Harvest Farmers Market since it began last year, but he likes how it’s starting to change.
"There’s more prepared food, so there’s more lunch options to have. I mean there’s still kind of vegetable stands and things you can take away, but now more and more, you have more options from a lunch perspective."
Before there were more items you would have to take home and cook. Now, you can actually buy lunch here, like some weird fancy hotdog made by the Eatsy Boys.
"Today we’ve got a home made chicken sausage on a pretzel bun…"
Ria Diaz works downtown and is hooked on the Farmers Market.
"I come here almost every Wednesday. I love Farmers Market."
Her coworker Karoline Humphries is starting to get hooked as well.
"I think this is a great alternative to eating the same old thing everyday."
The vendors are supposed to use food with ingredients that are locally grown. At Jackie Burdisso’s booth you can buy an assortment of cookies:
"Chocolate , limon, postacio, white peach…"
Burdisso says she’s seen business pick up since the market first started in October of last year.
"I think that’s really showing that Houston is looking for something more than just fast food. And they’re looking for freshly made local ingredients in their food."
Libby Kennedy is the manager of the Farmers Market and agrees its becoming more popular as people try it out and then bring friends and and coworkers with them the next time.
"We mostly get people working downtown that are on their lunch break and they come out and sit around the reflection pond or sit at the tables we have out here and have lunch."
Besides the food, one obvious reason the Farmers Market is popular with downtown workers is they can just walk. After all, trying to find a parking spot anywhere near City Hall can be pretty difficult.
