WTO Case Against China May Help Texas Poultry Farmers

eggs in cartonU.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said China violated international trade rules by imposing tariffs of fifty to one hundred percent on U.S. chicken exports. The tariffs took effect in August and September of last year.

“China is a huge market for our industry, especially for chicken feet, for which we have virtually no other market. The loss of this market has cost our industry probably an estimate of $1 billion and several hundred thousand jobs.”

Texas ranks seventh out of the fifty states in exports of poultry and poultry products, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In the year leading up to China’s imposition of tariffs, Texas poultry exports came to $257 million.
