Main St. Bridge Closes For Next Year

The N. Main Street bridge runs directly in front of the University of Houston-Downtown and is a large artery into the downtown area.

North Main Line Detour MapMETRO Spokeswoman Margaret O'Brien Molina says the bridge will close Monday morning and won't reopen until some time in late 2012.

"That is the dead end right now. That's where the line stops. We have seven and a half miles of rail through Houston, it stops at the University of Houston-Downtown. What we're going to be working on is the portion north of that and in order to get that work done it requires that we shut down N. Main at that juncture."

The expansion will connect the Main line with the North line, which will add another five miles of light rail. O'Brien Molina says there may be traffic delays in the area while commuters get used to the changes.

"Be patient with this progress. It's going to be well worth the while in the long run. But for the short-term, there's a well thought out plan to go out to the side by this detour — they're just going to have to follow the signs kind of and get used to it. We wanted to get it in place before students were back at the University of Houston-Downtown campus, so hopefully it'll go smoothly."

In addition to the North Line, METRO is simultaneously working on the East End and Southeast lines, all of which are scheduled to wrap up some time in 2014.
