The 12 percent increase in applications represents a record number of people seeking enrollment at UH.
Stephen Soutullo is associate vice president for student access at the university. He says there's been a steady increase in applications over the past few years.
"This year is higher than we expected and we believe it's because of the exposure that we've had with our Carnegie Foundation Tier One Research University designation and the Princeton Review's selection of UH as one of America's top universities."
Soutullo says UH expects applications to continue to increase as they gain more recognition nationally. The university already has plans in place to change its enrollment standards.
Right now the top 20 percent of high school grads get automatic enrollment. Next year that will change to the top 15 percent and then the top ten percent in 2014.
