Dutch Ambassador Renée Jones-Bos was on hand last night for the official opening of Netherlands Business Support Office Texas.
“We have the feeling that Texas seems to be emerging quite strongly from the [global economic] crisis, and so is the Netherlands, so we see great potential for further growth.”
In addition to such traditional areas of Dutch investment in Texas as energy, the office will also focus on water management and flood protection.
“We live in a country that is two-thirds at or below sea level, so we’ve been struggling with water issues for a long time, both coastal and river. So we see great opportunities there.”
The Dutch see that hard-won knowledge as potentially relevant to citizens in the Galveston Bay area, where storm surges during Hurricane Ike ranged from 10 to 20 feet above sea level. Dutch and American water management experts have been working closely together in Louisiana since Hurricane Katrina.
