Because this weekend is the unofficial start of the summer for many, the DPS will be on the lookout for a variety of roadway violations over the next few days.
"We'll have all available troopers out on Texas roadways this weekend looking for folks who are driving impaired, who aren't wearing seatbelts or who have passengers who aren't properly secured or vehicles that are speeding."
The DPS's Tela Mange says troopers will concentrate on the major highways, but will also patrol roads that aren't considered major arteries. She says the upcoming holiday weekend is historically pretty busy.
"Last year during the Memorial Day weekend we wrote around 6500 speeding citations and we arrested 549 impaired drivers just in that 3-day period. There are a lot of folks out there who are making some bad choices. We'd really prefer not to have to take anybody to jail or write any tickets so if you're planning on going out to the lake or going to a friend's house and having some alcohol, please designate a driver."
More than 2.7 million Texans are expected to travel away from home this weekend.
