Texas Unemployment Rate Improves

The eight percent unemployment rate is just a slight improvement over March's 8.1 percent. But it signals a continuing decline in the number of people without jobs.

TWC Chairman Tom Pauken says it's the third consecutive month we've seen a drop in the unemployment rate.

"Texas employers added 32,900 jobs in April, making it the seventh consecutive month of employment increases in our state. Annual job growth was positive as Texas added 254,400 jobs since last year."

Pauken says the strongest job growth sectors are transportation, trade and utilities.

The jobless rate in Texas is one percentage point lower than the rest of the nation. The national unemployment rate is nine percent.
