OTC International

OIL RIGSpend any time walking the floor of Reliant Center during the Offshore Technology Conference and you’ll get a refresher course in geography. Participants range from China’s Hong Hua to Brazil’s Flexomarine.

Promise Igwe is an engineer with Weafri Well Services, based in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

“Pretty much we do the same business like Halliburton and Schlumberger, we all do the same business. What brings us to the OTC is to tell the world that the African companies could also compete in a global market. We’ve come of age.”

There’s a sizable European presence here, too. Sir Alan Collins is Britain’s Consul-General to the U.S. and Director-General of UK Trade & Investment USA.

“Our objective in the UK is very much to go for a low-carbon economy. But in the foreseeable future, and very much the foreseeable future, oil and gas is still going to be a very big part of our energy mix. And, of course, we have our own oil and gas resources in the North Sea. So this particular event, OTC, is very important to us and to British companies.”

More than three dozen countries are hosting pavilions at this year’s OTC, which runs through Friday.
