Closing Schools and Shifting Students at HISD

Because of the state budget shortfall, HISD expects to lose 160-million dollars in state funding. The district has now offered a plan to save almost 1.7 million dollars with the closings.

"We're looking at McDade, Rhoads, Grimes and Stevenson elementary schools."

HISD's Jason Spencer says students from those schools, and others, will be sent to other schools.

"We'll redraw some schools attendance lines to more evenly distribute students among various schools. We have some schools which are beyond their capacity."

HISD says schools that have more students get more funding, so students from the closed schools will have greater access to programs and services as the student population grows at their new schools.

HISD is also reviewing school bus routes in light of these changes.  The Board of Education will vote on the proposed changes on May 12.
