29 Chihuahuas Fly to Houston

Chihuahuas are very popular pets in southern California, and so they also end up at shelters there in large numbers. Because small dogs are often easier to adopt, LA Shelters have been air lifting there abundance of Chihuahuas to other cities.

"It's been just over a year they've been doing this program and they've gone to Denver, Florida and now Houston."

That's Meera Nandlal with the Houston SPCA, who says some of the little critters have already found a home.

"There all being housed in our Small Dog and Puppy room, and I walked through and saw several of them with there little surgery cards "I'm adopted" and I'm going to have surgery, so I've already found a home."

Nandlal says Continental Airlines paid for Air Chihuahua.  She says it is not uncommon for over crowded shelters to send dogs to another part the country.  In fact the LA shelter helped Houston when lots of dogs here lost their homes during Hurricane Ike. She expects these Chihuahuas to be adopted quickly.

"They are all, every single one that I have had the opportunity to be around, they are all very sweet, they like to be held, are very playful, they're very alert dogs."

Adoptions cost between 95 and 100-dollars. Nandlal says your first step is to talk with an adoption counselor at the SPCA at 900 Portway.
