Skate Rink Opens Downtown

Ready or not, it’s that time of year. And while the chances of having a real winter wonderland here in Houston are slim, you can have the next best thing — an artificial one.  To help get you in that festive mood, the city has put in a temporary skating rink at downtown’s Discovery Green.

"It’s a really popular attraction."

Susanne Theis is program director for Discovery Green Park. She says the ice skating rink gives people of all ages and abilities a chance to have fun.

"The last two years we had over a quarter-of-a-million people come and ice skate and enjoy everything we have in the park. There are some days where people are out in the fountain and ice skating at the same time and so we look for more of that this season. There is beautiful holiday artwork and decor"

Discovery Green is located across the street from the George R. Brown Convention Center and is situated right in the middle between Minute Maid Park and the Toyota Center. Theis says they’ve had a quarter-of-a-million people come to the ice rink the past two years and they hope to continue the fun this holiday season.

"The whole goal of this ice rink is the goal of the park . We feel like we’re really situated in an ideal spot to create public space for Houstonians to enjoy being together with each other."

If you want to make a day of it, Theis says you can go from one downtown spot to another.

"There’s a wonderful holiday trolley that connects, it’s on the weekends and its free that connects all of the downtown destinations from the theater district to the Heritage Society and over here to the East End for the ice rink."

The only thing missing is Santa, but even St. Nick pay a visit each Saturday. The rink will be open until January 17th. Tickets are ten dollars.
