Two Children Die in Apartment Fire

The fire department got the call around 4:40 this morning. By the time they arrived, the structure was fully involved with people trapped inside. Webster Fire Chief Patrick Shipp says they entered the apartment, but had to leave shortly after when the building became unstable.

"We started having structure collapse of the building, had the roof coming in, some of the walls started coming in on them. We had to pull them out and went defensive."

Ship says there were four children inside ranging from age 5 to 12. A neighbor said he could hear them screaming, but there was nothing he could do. Two children were eventually found dead and a third was airlifted to the hospital. Chief Ship says the flames were just too strong.

"Where we found that last victim, there was way too much fire involved in that room upon our arrival, so we couldn’t even make entry into that room at the time."

Brandon Moore lives next door with his wife and little girl. They managed to escape but their apartment is still a loss.

"We’re just getting what we can. We’ve got some toys and some pictures, essential needs, things that we can’t replace. Everything else is just gone. No clothes or anything."

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation. One neighbor said this was the third fire at the complex he’s seen. The others he said were caused by stoves.
