Memorial Drive between Waugh and Bagby will be shut down late Friday night for construction work on the Rosemont Bridge. Joe Turner is the director of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. He says crews will hoist 3 beams into place, each of them weighing 20-tons.
"And what they'll be doing, starting as soon as daylight Saturday morning, they'll start installing the span that goes across Memorial Drive, and two other sections of the bridge that are on the north bank of the bayou."
The pedestrian bridge will eventually reach the south bank of the bayou, as well. The closure of Memorial Drive is scheduled to run through late Sunday night, though it could re-open earlier. Turner says the Rosemont Bridge an essential piece of the trail system that will enable people to get in and around Buffalo Bayou Park without a car.
"When this bridge is in place, it brings Spotts Park up to the crossing. And then we've got, of course, a crossing that's going in lower, toward downtown. It's actually going to allow us to bring the Sixth Ward into the trail system, also. It's just a great way that we connect our city along with our trail system."
Turner expects Rosemont Bridge will be finished and ready for pedestrians and cyclists by late December or early January.
