Tote Bags to Prevent Vehicular Theft

We live in a fast paced world with our minds racing to the point of distraction. You arrive at your destination, get out of your vehicle, and lock it. But it's all for naught because you left it with valuables in plain view:

"If a thief is walking by the vehicle and they see these valuables, it's so easy for them to just grab them, and if they have to vandalize your vehicle in order to get those items, that's what they're gonna do."

Thats Deputy Sandy Johnson with the Harris County Sheriff's Department. She says there is no such thing as a courteous car burglar:

"We're looking at people that are desperate, and they're not worried about your belongings, or your privacy or your rights, and they're not worried about your safety. So, the Sheriff's Office encourages everyone first, demonstrate personal safety."

Deputy Johnson says The Automobile Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority of Texas is teaming up with the Sheriff's Department in the "Watch Your Car" campaign next month. Free tote bags will be offered at its storefront locations:

"The bag is just to try to get you aware of getting into the habit of removing items, electronic devices, cell phones, purses, brief cases, taking them into the work place or into your home, and securing them in a locked area."

Johnson says burglaries of motor vehicles have steadily increased and usually peak during the summer months:

"We're trying to tell people take this bag, it's got a pamphlet in it that also has some wonderful crime prevention information in it."
