HISD Asks Public for Help

Houston ISD has a long history of tension with the community. A perceived lack of transparency and inequity between inner city and more affluent schools are among the frequent complaints lodged against the district.

HISD Chief of Staff Michelle Pola says one of the goals for the strategic plan is to build trust in the community through action.

"And we know that the action is what people are wanting to see. And that this isn't about words, but that it's about the action. So that when we say we're talking about rigorous standards in all of our schools, that it will be evident to the public that is occurring. When we say that we're committed to having effective quality teachers in every classroom, it will be evident to the public."

To that end, HISD is holding a community meeting tonight at 6pm. Pola says they want feedback on what's happening in the district and ideas for the future.

"And then we're looking for those wow factors that no one on staff had thought about that, or that we hadn't seen it from that perspective of what we should be paying attention to or maybe what we don't need to pay attention to."

Pola says the district's Strategic Direction will be released in August. Tonight's meeting will last until 7:30 at HISD headquarters, located at 4440 West 18th Street.ξ For more information, visit the HISD Strategic Direction page about the event
