Capitol To Get 3 Million in Security Upgrades

The board voted 5-1 to install metal detectors and a better camera system, along with increasing patrols around the Capitol complex. The enhanced security will cost around $3 million and could change the way thousands of visitors get access to the building.ξFour main entrances will stay open, but x-ray machines,ξbomb sniffing dogs and enhanced tactical response teams will be added.

Governor Rick Perry voted against the upgrades, saying they could make things difficult for visitors. The new measures could be in place in 45 days.

In January, a man fired a gun outside the Capitol building, prompting a security review that resulted in the security upgrades.ξξ
