The Texas Workforce Commission says the unemployment rate in February was 8.2 percent —ξ the same number for the four month in a row.ξ
Commission chair Tom Pauken says the 12,000 jobs that were added in January were more than canceled out by the 13,000 that evaporated last month.
"We did suffer employment losses in government, education, and health services, financial activities and construction — all of which had net job losses in February."
Pauken says the brightest sector in the state labor market in February was professional and business services — which posted its highest monthly gain since January of 2008.ξ Other sectors that did well include manufacturing, mining and logging, and information services.
In the Houston Metro area, the jobless rate is 8.5 percent — down slightly from January, but still almost two percent higher than a year ago.ξξ
