Speaker Pelosi came to recognize the leaders of the Port of Houston. It was awarded nearly 100-million dollars from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
"This is a shining example of a recognition of the quality of the project, what you're doing at the Port, a collaboration across business and labor, public, private, non-profit, protect the environment, secure our country, grow our commerce, and to do so in a way that again, attracts private dollars."
Houston Congressman Gene Green says the Port has received the stimulus money to address critical needs by building dredge material andξplacement areas.
"There are jobs that depend on it, the petrochemical industry, our longshoremen, our Houston pilots, anyone who has impact on the Port of Houston. So, that's why these funds to keep the Port dredged to 45-foot regularly so we can get those ships in and out, so we can unload that cargo, so we can send out our manufactured products to other parts of the country and the world."ξξ
Speaker Pelosi says the success at the Port of Houston is of national significance.
"Not only because it creates jobs here and for the state of Texas, and for our country really, but because it is a model of how to get it done."
Houston Republican lawmakers issued a statement in advance of Pelosi's visit. They said that because of the Obama administration, the Johnson Space Center and BAE Systems' military vehicle production facility together stand to lose nearly 20-thousand jobs.
