The cost of tuition at the central campus will go up almost 4-percent next year, or an extra 137-dollars a semester for full-time, undergraduate and resident students. Dr. Renu Khator is University of Houston Chancellor.
"We wanted to make sure the University of Houston remains affordable, and a 3.95 percent tuition increase for undergraduate students is very much within the norms of the state as well as the nation and we will be raising nine million dollars to put behind the student scholarships."
The university will continue to offer the Cougar Promise. That's where UH provides tuition and fees to students from households that make less thanξ45-thousand dollars per year. Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA and meetξother eligibility requirements.
Welcome Wilson, Sr, is chairman of the board of regents of the University of Houston System. He says Chancellor Khator spent time cutting the university budget to come up with the most reasonable tuition increase.
"We are cutting the budget an equal amount, so that the public can know that we're doing everything possible to keep the tuition low."
Comparable tuition hikes were approved for other campuses in the UH system. Graduate students will see an average cost increase of over 7-percent, while the law school will see the largest jump at 20-percent. Wilson says for the money, the university beats other institutions in Texas.
"University of Houston tuition is less than its peer universities, University of Texas and Texas A&M, so the University of Houston tuition is still a bargain statewide."ξ
