Texas Lawmakers Respond to State Of the Union Address

President Obama says the economy and jobs will be his number one focus this year. Critics say the speech didn't deliver on that promise. But Houston area Democrat Gene Green likes the President's pro business plan and says it will work.

"I'd like any other suggestions. Because he actually talked about tax cuts and tax credits even to small businesses to put people to work."

Green agrees with the President in saying Democrats have significant majorities and the American public expect them to improve the economy and pass health care reform.

Green also applauded President Obama's ideas for deficit reduction. The President called for a three year freeze in spending starting in 2011. Senator John Cornyn points out the President's proposal would only apply to a fraction of Federal spending.ξ

"I think there is less there than meets the eye. But if this is a gesture of intent to start to engage in some fiscal responsibility then I think it's a good first step. But we should not stop there."ξ

Cornyn also spoke out against ending the ban on gays serving openly in the military. He says it would add unnecessary strain to the armed forces, especially in a time of war.
